Born and raised in South Africa, actress and model Charlize Theron didn't have an easy start.
Charlize Theron is the Oscar-winning actress from Benoni, Transvaal, South Africa. She was born there on August 7, 1975.
Theron was raised by her mother. Her father was abusive drunkard, and Theron's mother have killed him in self-defense.
After that, they bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, and never looked back. That was in 1994, and for young Charlize it was an opportunity of a life time.
She was already modeling by the age of 16, and when she turned 19, she became interested in acting.
Theron's first role was in Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest (1995). Her first bigger role came with Tom Hanks' big screen directorial debut That Thing You Do! (1996). She has won the Academy Award for Best Leading Role in Monster (2003), and she was nominated for another Oscar in North Country (2005).
